Orrin Keepnews dies at 91

Orrin KeepnewsAs it has just become known, Sunday, March 1st one of the most influential people in jazz, Orrin Keepnews, has passed away. In 1953 Keepnews founded the Riverside Jazz label that released records by, among others, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins. Later Keepnews eventually also founded Milestone Records and Landmark Records. Keepnews was also a producer and produced records by Gerry Mulligan, Benny Golson, Coleman Hawkins, Bobby Timmons, The Modern Jazz Quarted and many others.

Orrin Keepnews died at home in El Cerrito, California. He died one day before his 92nd birthday.
